Doing a brief spate of shows while on the filming schedule for TWD, Emily was endearing to listen to as she played songs from her two EPs, “Blue Toothbrush” and “Expired Love.” After only seeing her playing the understandably stressed Beth on TWD – where she worries daily about zombies eating her – it was a surprise to see her so relaxed, happy, and delightful, and even more, to realize that not only is she an accomplished singer and guitar player but she is quite funny as well. She told the backstory of why she wrote several of her songs; one in particular that made the crowd laugh was for “This Is War,” which was driven by a former well-known songwriter boyfriend telling her after seeing her show, “Um … you ought to stick with acting.” Needless to say, they broke up and she used the memory to turn an unpleasant moment into a positive affirmation of her own worth and talent.

Eddie’s is a small venue that is known throughout Georgia and beyond as one of the premier spots to listen to acoustic / solo performers. It’s small and there isn’t a bad spot in the place, and they do not allow talking and greatly discourage moving around during the performance. The sold-out show packed in as much as the room could hold, including several cast members and crew from The Walking Dead (which is filmed entirely here on location in Georgia), who all came to support their colleague. Greg Nicotero, executive producer, director, and special effects makeup artist stayed from early to late and graciously posed for many many fan pictures. Others in the cast (Steven Yeun, Danai Gurira, Chad Coleman, Christian Serratos, Josh McDermitt, Michael Cudlitz, Sonequa Martin-Green, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., and Gino whose last name I didn’t get – he has played several zombies ), sneaked in during the first song, stood near the back, and made a quiet exit so that Emily could have all the spotlight on “her” night.

Emily will be playing again at Eddie’s Attic on October 31, in a special Halloween costume event (the “Emily Kinney Halloween Extravaganza”) where she might, she told me, dress up as a bee. Come in costume; she’ll be judging and it’s bound to be another wonderful show and a great way to spend a Friday. She’ll also be at the Rockwood Music Hall in NYC on 9/18, and at the Candlelight Concert for Epilepsy Awareness in Ewing, NJ, on 10/24.
