**Birdy on an upward trajectory to the sky**
Touring in support of her latest release Fire Within, Birdy brings a voice full of a soulful richness that belies her young age. She opened her set playing her first two songs on keys with two guitars backing, but the piano’s clearly audible tones are the star instrument when she is on it. As with Lorde, whom I was reminded of when seeing Birdy, there seems to be a spate of young talented female artists lately who are not on the “big production pop path” but rather sing deeply and meaningfully and allow their voices and lyrics and instrument to be the star instead of a gigantic theatrical stage show overtaking everything. I think this started with Adele – her voice is much “older” and her lyrics and performance a sharp contrast to other singers of the same age who are developing a much more bubblegum repetoire. Nothing wrong with that, and that style has certainly been successful for many women singers, but it’s nice to see some upcoming strong female artists who seem to have a deeper focus than wondering out loud when that cute guy is gonna text them.
Being a singer-songwriter, there’s no wild stage antics (which do make for good photographs) but I think being so young and as-yet not jaded or cynical (hopefully that will never happen), she smiles a LOT and just looks so happy and almost surprised that anyone is there just to see her. It’s kind of refreshing.
More pictures coming soon.
